After seeing this stunning photograph (I am actually a little too proud of this snapshot- it gives a total sense of the atmosphere of the inside of the Presidio Social Club), you'll choke on your burrito when you see the outside:
Yeah. I know. It's a mess hall? Barracks? Where I used to sleep at camp? Plus, it's in an area where you might think you were going to walk into military housing. Yet this is one of the charms of the Presidio Social Club. It's not a "see and be seen" establishment (likes its neighbor- Pres a Vi). It just wants people who like food and an old-San-Francisco-meets-Casablanca environment. Well, I guess Felix and I fit the bill because we had a great dinner here tonight.
Those are crab cupcakes. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and the crunch gave way to an awesome tender middle.
Ok, yes- we ordered grilled cheese at a non-diner restaurant. We were at their communal table, and we overheard that the last couple sitting our seats complained that they didn't come to nice restaurants to order grilled cheese. Now, I'm sure there is no such thing as a perfect grilled cheese- but this came pretty close. The brioche bread was thick and fluffy and crisped with butter on the outside, and the hint of sweetness in the tomato sauce complimented the intensity of the Gruyere.
Felix had the Kobe beef sloppy joe, which we talked about with the couple across from us. They apparently knew the chef and were trying to identify a spice that was used in the sauce. I was really proud to be correct with my guess of star anise. I had the trout with brown butter- but neither of our pictures came out very well.
Yet, our dessert picture came out great:
Banana Cream Pie. Beautifully displayed and a great end to the dinner. We may even come back...
