Restaurant Reviews

I’m brilliant when ordering at restaurants. I have a talent for picking out the best from the menu and having others glare at me with food envy. Though I may pass a bite or two across the table, their entrée is still theirs and mine is still mine. It’s hard being brilliant.

The exception is Asian food.

Then I become mentally retarded. The tables turn and I sit and pout and poke at my bland noodle broth while watching my dining partner suck up gluts of yummy thai noodles. So now, whenever I go out to any Asian restaurant (except I can pretty well navigate sushi), I let Felix order for me. I usually fight with him about his order for me, but then he reminds me about the last 97 bowls of bad noodle soup I have had and I shut up and let him do the talking.

Last night at Long Life Noodle Company was no different.

I came in craving noodle soup. I’m always craving Asian noodle soup. It’s like what I do- crave Asian noodle soup. There was a time (or was it only a dream?) that I had this rich chicken broth infused with spices- the noodles, vegetables and chicken were happily swimming in this steaming soup. It tasted like health and prosperity. I want that soup. I yearn for that soup. So I try to order it everywhere- and everywhere fails me. If you know of this place when this soup exists- I beg you, take pity on a poor white girl and let me know.

So Felix gave me a few choices and then tried to explain the concept behind these noodle bowls:

“Kristen, it doesn’t matter that you don’t want beef because the meat in the noodle dish is not what the dish is about- you will get tiny slivers of that meat- look at the sauce.”

“But Felix, I really really want my noodle soup!”

“Too bad- this is Asian land where I rule and you are my subject!”

Ok, he didn’t really say that. But wouldn’t it be cool if he did?

Felix’s food came out first- The Chow Fun with Beef:

God it smelled good. I want that beefy sauce- It smelled like a stir fry you might make at home with oyster sauce and lots of onions. Why did I order the Pork Curry? Was I misled by my own husband. Oh, wait, here’s mine- The Curry Imperial:

I poulted a bit, and then took a bite.

It was good for a fast noodle stop. No, there wasn’t much depth to the flavor or the big fat udon noodles but it was about 1000 times better than the Asian noodle soup that I usually order. You won’t be in awe -but if you come to the Metreon before a showing of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, you’ll have a quick, cheap, satisfactory meal.

Have you tried Zao Noodles before? I haven't tested their asian noodle soups per se, but their noodle curries (at least, their vegetarian curries) are excellent. It might be a step towards soupy goodness
