The new Michael Bauer Top 100 has come out. Here it is, with your lovely hostess's comments:
A Cote: Been once. Have no memory of the event. That's wrong- I remember thinking the place had nice decor.
A16: Been once. We really need to go again because I can't think about a restaurant right now move raved about, and Felix and I didn't order the right stuff. Or maybe we were in a bad mood. I'm not sure. If you have suggestions, do tell- I hear everybody gets all excited about the meatballs.
Acquerello: This is on the list of places that Felix and I will go for a birthday or anniversary.
Ad Hoc: We'll hopefully go there on our next annual trip to Napa.
Amber India: Been once. Delicious. And I'm glad Michael Bauer is giving some props to the South Bay.
Ame: Been once- Felix went again for a business dinner- I think that is the proper venue- business dinner- but I did love the food.
Antica Trattoria: Nope.
Aqua: Been once like 15 years ago. I remember it being good.
Aziza: I keep meaning to go on a "dine about town January" because it's all the way on the other side of the city and I'm too lazy to get my butt over there.
Bar Crudo: Never been. Felix and I will go to a few plays this spring and we'll pop in.
Bay Wolf: Been once. Feels like Chez Panisse. That's a good thing.
Betelnut: Been once- I think it's waaaaay over rated. It's sooooo loud. I said LOUD! LOUD!!! You feel like you're at a death metal concert. A good smelling death metal concert.
Bistro Aix: Been once and I don't know why we haven't gone back. I think it's one of the best bangs for your buck in the city.
Bistro Don Giovanni: Nope
Bistro Jeanty: Been once. I might kill for their french onion soup...
Bix: Been once. Mom's b-day. It's a nice scene- I like being upstairs and people watching.
Bo's bbq and Catering: I'm going to call my east bay cousins and go.
Bocadillos: Been once. Cute bites near a place that is not so cute...North Beach.
Bouchon: Been once. It was fine. I like Bistro Jeanty better.
Boulevard: Been twice. Thirteen years apart. I think it lost it's luster a bit the second time- they changed pastry chefs and the new one isn't as impressive.
Buckeye Roadhouse: Nope.
Cafe La Haye: Nope.
Canteen: No! I really need to get enough people together to get a reservation here. I just can't deal with not having reservations, but I really really want to eat here. Maybe a play...
Cetrella Bistro and Cafe: Nope.
Chez Panisse: Been once and I'm going again with the Amateur Gourmet on his trip out here in a few weeks!
Chow/Park Chow: Been once. This probably is, definitively, the best bang for your buck in the city. And the one in Noe Valley/Castro is centrally located too.
Coco500: Been once. Really enjoyed the scene. Though I must say, when I read about it, I thought that the scene would be younger than it was. Maybe it's because we ate early...
Coi: Nope. I waver. Almost made a reservation for my bday. But then I read a review about how someone wanted to throw-up after eating there! My friend Lindz and I want to go this spring.
Cyrus: This is on the list for our next trip to Napa as well.
Defina: Been Once. Great, unpretentious meal. Go there.
Dopo: This sounds dumb, but I can't remember if we've been there or not...
Dry Creek Kitchen: Nope.
Farallon: Been twice. Both in high school/college. Both times we saw a play after dinner. It's a great spot for that.
Farmhouse Inn and Restaurant: I think I've been here once. One year, on our way to Willits, Dad made us all drive out of the way to go to a restaurant. This might have been it. We were all tired and grumpy and I don't remember anything about the meal.
Firefly: Been once. They have something for everyone.
Fleur de Lys: Been once. Impressive, but not the most impressive expensive restaurant in town.
Foreign Cinema: Been Twice. One time was during that heat wave last summer and a melon and cheese appetizer was so refreshing, I wanted to cry. But it can be cold if you sit outside, so bring a jacket.
French Laundry: No. cry. sigh. It's gonna happen this summer. I can feel it...
Gary Danko: Been twice. Both meals made me feel like a princess.
Greens: Been once. Good place to take your meat eating friends who are open to an idea of a vegetarian restaurant.
Hog Island Oyster Co.: Been once. At happy hour. The happy hour deals are well worth it.
Jai Yun: Another place I want to go within the year. With Felix's family.
Jardinere: Been once. It's the kind of place your hip parents like. My mom remarked that it was the best tasting menu she's ever had. You can't go wrong with Jardinere.
Kaygestu: Nope. I really need to give the south bay some love.
Koi Palace: Been at least once. Their Chinese banquets are pretty amazing.
Kokkari Estoria: Been once. I like Evvia in Palo Alto better. Kokkari has good food but it's so dark. I think Evvia's set up and architecture is very pleasing.
La Folie: Been once. They sat us by the kitchen and so my mom was really unhappy. And when mama's unhappy...
La Taqueria: NO! VIVA LA Taqueria Cancun! Long live Taqueria Cancun!! Ok...maybe I should try something else...
Limon: Nope. But I do keep meaning to go there.
Manresa: Yes. And we knew someone in the kitchen when we went so we got fed a bazillion courses. It's heaven. Go there. go there. go there.
Martini House: Been once. Had the tomato tasting menu in august. Is there anything better?
I'm around half way through...click on for the rest of the list...
Masa's: Been once. It was a little stuffy for me.
Michael Mina: Been once. Another place to take your really hip parents. Even though it's kind of pedestrian, I can't resist his root beer float.
Myth: Been once. It was a great meal.
O Chame: Nope.
Olivito: My uncle took me to Bay Wolf last summer, and he said that he'd take me out whenever I wanted (what a good uncle!) This is the next place on my list.
Ozumo: Nope. Felix has been there a ton. Business sushi.
Perbacco: Been once. Nice to have another good restaurant in the financial district.
Pescheria: Nope. Almost did once. But almost doesn't count.
Piperade: Been once and I need to go again. Their food is different. The place is sexy and social. Love it.
Pizzaiolo: Been once. Food was great. Company was great. Go with people you don't mind getting close to, because the place is loud!
Pizzeria Picco: Nope
Plumpjack Cafe: Been once. But I hear the change of chef has made an amazing difference. Maybe we'll go again.
Poleng Lounge: Nope
Quince: Been once. Try to get the corner table.
Range: Been once. I doesn't look like it's going to be great. But it is. Really amazing.
Redd: Been once. I think it was over hyped for me.
Rubicon: Been once. Forever ago. Felix goes all the time for business stuff.
Scott Howard: Another one on my list to go to this year.
Slanted Door: Been 3 or 4 times. Again, go with people you are comfortable with, because you'll practically have to be shouting in their ear to have a conversation. That said it is a must to visit if you live in SF.
Slow Club: Nope.
Sushi Ran: Nope. I yearned to go here- but then I found Kabuto. It's probably like wanting to marry Brad Pitt, and then finding the real man of your dreams. Maybe I'll never know. I'm pretty loyal to Kabuto...
Swan Oyster Depot: Nope.
Tartine: Been once. Don't even go within 5 blocks of this place if you are watching what you eat. Or be prepared to watch yourself eat all of it. All...of...it...
Terzo: Been twice. My new favorite restaurants of the year.
The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton: Been once. Lost my engagement ring under the table and had 5 servers with mini-flashlights dive under the table looking for it. Kind of embarrassing. But the food and wine were great.
The Matterhorn Swiss Restaurant: Nope
Ton Kiang: I've been meaning to go there with the Restaurant Whore for awhile, and maybe this list will push me over the edge.
Town Hall: Been there three times. If I could only eat one dessert for the rest of my life- it might be their chocolate and butterscotch pudding.
Tres Agaves:Been twice. Why are they on this list? I'm always mad that I can't just order a burrito. Maybe that's the point.
Va de Vi: Nope
Vik's Chaat Corner: Nope
Yank Sing: Been there probably a dozen times. Good Dim Sum. But Expensive.
Zuni Cafe: Been 3 or 4 times. I always sit in a totally different place. The one I like best overlooks the kitchen. Great great food.
At this count, I've been to exactly half of the 100 restaurants on the list. Not bad. I would love to say that I'll visit the next half within the year. Do you think I could do it? I actually don't think I could. That's around one a week and I wouldn't be able to try all of the fun new places that I like to review for you. Also, there may be too many "special occasion" restaurants on the list to hit all of them. Well, despite these things, oh heck, I think I might give it a try. Well see how many I get through by the time the next list comes out...
