Restaurant Reviews

There are places that remind me of my age. I don't mean whether I'm young and perky or old and balding- I'm talking about things that remind me that I grew up in the 1990's, and therefore used to do things like peg my pants, use payphones and proudly drive my parent's 8 mpg Toyota Land Cruiser.

The new restaurant that just (November 1st) opened in the Mission (the, eh-em, ungentrified section) is one of these places.  The mishmash decor (are we on a boat with the portholes or Medieval England with the chandelier?) and Mazzy Star playing in the background made me feel like I was right back in my bedroom as a teenager:

Well, ok, except I didn't have a massive kitchen in my bedroom.

But before I get too sentimental and weepy- let's talk about the food.

The food itself was good. My favorite dish of the night was a New England Clam Chowder that had a lighter consistency that your usual thick, pasty NECC ( I probably shouldn't start in on the acronyms or else I'll sound too much like you-know-who). The lighter herbed broth and the fact that it was chalk full of potatoes and clams made it close to a perfect soup, and something that I've been craving these last few nights while the weather has been chilly. I want to say cold, even freezing, but every time I bring up those words in the same sentence with "California", my east coast friends get pissed.

On to the main courses. We had the fish tacos:

Do you like how I caught that drop of lemon juice on camera? Yeah, it was an accident. It's safe to say that these fish tacos were the best fish tacos I've ever had. Now, that alone is not saying much because the only other ones I've had were at Chevy's. But these were good- there was a lot going on: a tomato sauce, a mango salsa and some coleslaw were all playing around in the fish taco with the ecofriendly tilapia. I was surprised that all of the flavors melded so well together in each bite.

And we had to get the fish and chips:

Do you see that fry that looks like a carrot in the lower left corner? It's actually a sweet potato fry. At first I was a moron and dipped this treasure in ketchup. That was pretty stupid. These guys are good all by themselves (well, maybe with a shake or two of salt) and I would go back solely for these divine morsels. The fish itself was good when you simply consider the food, and great when you factor in the price. I think that is going to be one of the main draws, really good food for really reasonable prices.  Though, that's now describing every worthy restaurant in the Mission. So I guess Weird Fish will fit right in!

That Land Cruiser was sweet. Mem'ries....

And also, you know what? San Francisco IS freezing. Take it from someone who has lived in LA for the past 10 years... it is seriously cold up there; whenever I go back home I can't believe it. So don't feel bad, you can say it! Freeze. Ing.

Actually, when I arrived in NYC earlier this week from SF, it was almost 20 degrees warmer. I must have brought the cold weather with me on my trip. Unfortunately, the excitement of having warm weather in New York lasted all of two days, and now we're back to the typical freezing (below 32) temperatures.

I think you mean "chock-full."

I like your blog.
